This wine was made from Chardonnay clones 96 and 548, picked from the west side of the Stonebridge Estate vineyard, Block 11. The grapes were hand-harvested into small bins and kept clonally separate, then pressed and wild fermented in 33% new French Oak puncheons and barrels. The low intervention, wild fermentation took 2 months to complete. Wine completed its malolactic-fermentation at its own pace during this time. This small batch was aged a total of 22 months in barrel before bottling. Only a small fraction of barrels was selected for this reserve batch. This wine has developed a complex nose of citrus and apple, with hints of quince supported by well a blended bouquet of spices and vanilla. The acidity is fresh, hinting a long finish.

(…) the 2019 Stonebridge Reserve West continues to act like a chardonnay directed by the power from the vineyard. This from a vintage like several previous cool-ish ones is something we can collectively look forward to re-tasting again over the coming four to six years. Lots of pulpy quality and texture for ’19 with a golden-honeyed sensation gained at the finish. April 2024. West is smart, high-pitched and almost striking chardonnay, laden with lemon from start to finish. There is little doubt that the best fruit used for Reserve is just that and translates not just the terroir but a Peter Gamble style of chardonnay that is expressly his. Great energy, varietal sprit and vintage capture which means Block 11 is meant to express like this. This vineyard definitely expresses power as noted in the exceptional length of the wine.
